Adding to this I had been researching the concepts of graffiti and this also had left me with a lot of questions, how is graffiti viewed throughout society, what is it that really drives the DPM graffiti crew, how is it possible that society contradict its self from reading a view articles and blogs it seemed clear that there was a division and a division which contradicted its self. From an article written by The Independent on 16 July 08 it explains how five members of the DPM crew were sentenced to two year imprisonment while by contrast at the same time the Tate Modern was presenting urban art from Blu of Bologna, Faile from New York and Sixeart from Barcelona.

There is a big question surrounding this topic is graffiti Street Art or Crime? Banksy is known through out the graffiti circle as someone who started of sneaking his work into galleries now the Tate Modern sell his book his work is sold for hundreds of pounds some would say he is iconic. So what makes it acceptable? The article went on to explore how graffiti is viewed internationally, i.e. Brazil and Melbourne embrace graffiti where as the UK and other parts of Australia dislike it. So why is there this difference and what does it mean?

From my reading it was clear there is a lot of anger around the subject, the article describes it as a highly polarized phenomenon, Elura Emerald was involved with the New York exhibition who is quoted as saying “artists who paint on the street are merely expressing themselves, not hurting anyone” where as Judge Christopher Hardy described the actions of DMP at southwark court as “ a wholesome self-indulgent campaign to damage property”

There is a hugh contrast in perceptions and my original interest in this area was to establish when thinking of how graffiti could be used to attract young people to engage with issues such as cultural diversity and what it means to them, migration, environmental effects, politics and so on, the idea was for the target audience to use graffiti as a main component to communicate there ideas.

However after reading some articles I felt intimidated by the subject and it seemed the first question I should be asking is what is my stance on this subject matter? Do I agree with graffiti? Can graffiti be viewed in two ways art vs. tag? And what are the social problems surround this subject? And how will my project benefit this target audience? My main concern to this project is it remains ethical and sustainable in the sense that it encourages young people to engage in subject matters in a responsible way.

On a positive note the article illustrated how one graffiti artist Ziggy 25 who had recently been jailed for 18 months for vandalizing public property had been employed by Greenwich and Tower Hamlet council to work on summer workshops as street art tutors for young and vulnerable people. The council described Ziggy as positive and Inspirational.

The article also highlights how media campaigns cash in on the art of graffiti leading to more confusion on the subject.

After expressing this concern of mine and that I had increasing interesting in environmental concepts and the importance of eco- tourism and how this concept could be sustained it was decided that I research around the idea of eco tourism to produce an IPTV channel based around eco- tourism. I felt a bit of a relief as I have contacts in this area of field and I find it an important concept however I want to make sure what I am doing for my big idea sustains my interest and my passion. I am not sure it will however I can see how it can be a marketable idea.

Adding to this is my reflection that O2 was originally interested in my Graffiti idea and if I don’t embrace this am I throwing away an amazing opportunity. Also I am aware that I have an interest growing in Architecture and how design can be used to help people in poor communities.

So I have had an idea to explore Architecture as an IPTV channel. I hope by researching into these areas I will be able to make a more firm decision.

I also expressed a concern to work with Kitty on a collaborate project engaging with the concept of environmental space and how it can be used by the public and can this be sustained.

After expressing my concerns I was surprised by James positive feedback he said I worked well with technology and that I did not lack confidence. He advised I should work with a third year Patrick Allen as I do not want to produce a website. So I will provide the content and Patrick will provide the programming.

On reflection I feel I need to research more and have another meeting to move forward.
